102 Critical Reading and Bias Professor Ramos Blog
102 Critical Reading and Bias Quick Write Quick Write Write for 3 minutes on this quote. Bias We have talked about some important concepts concerning critical thinking. Ignorance Egocentric Thinking Intellectual Empathy Integrity Hypocrisy We are going to addà Biasà to that list. What is Bias? Biasà ââ¬â prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person, or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. So what exactly is bias and how does it connect to our class? Critical Reading Chapter 2 was an introduction into critical reading. Critical reading is very important to critical thinking and writing. The two main points are: One should read carefully Making a summary helps one grasp an argument. While these may seem obvious, they are also often ignored by students. Knowledge begins with reading carefully. Students that struggle with critical writing and argument usually have a difficult time because they failed to read carefully. DO NOT ASSUMEà you know what they are talking about. You need to put in the time to read, follow, and understand others arguments in order to become a critical thinker and writer. Writing a summary of a reading or an argument helps us to make sure that we understood it correctly. I ask you to summarize in your weekly journals, because I am looking for how you are reading something, if you are reading it correctly and understanding it. It is very easy to miss read something. Chapter 3, Critical Reading: Getting Deeper into Arguments takes us further into critical reading. It is much more in depth and thorough. Persuasionà is to convince someone else to accept or adopt your position, which can be accomplished in a number of ways (80). Argument writing or critical writing focuses more on the logos, or appeal to reason. Logos: appeal to reason Pathos: appeal to emotions Ethos: appeal to credibility or trustworthiness Argumentà represents only one form of persuasion, one that relies on the cognitive or intellectual capacity for reason (80). An argument doesnââ¬â¢t require two speakers or writers with opposing positions. They may, but you can write an argument, using appeals to reason with out setting it up as a dispute. Disputeà is a special kind of argument in which two or more people express views that are at odds (81). Reason v Rationalization Reason:à the power of the mind to think, understand, and form judgments by a process of logic. We can reason through induction and deduction. Deductionà takes beliefs and assumptions and extracts their hidden consequences/conclusions (106). For Example: Premise: Humans are mortal Premise: Socrates is human Conclusion: Socrates is mortal. This statement is aà syllogism. premise + premise = Conclusion Sound Arguments All premises must be true The syllogism must be valid, premises support the conclusion. Then, the argument is said to beà sound. Fallaciesà are kinds of invalid arguments. Inductionà uses information about observed cases to reach a conclusion about unobserved cases. For Example: If we see the train arrive at six am, several days in a row, we can reason that it will arrive at six am tomorrow. Unlike deduction, induction yields conclusions that go beyond the information contained in the premises used in their support. Rationalizeà means to devise a self serving reason. We can come up with reasons and justifications to make ourselves feel better, but that does not mean that we are using reason. This is where the struggle will always be. We canââ¬â¢t be sure we are not rationalizing, but we can seek to think critically, examine our beliefs, scrutinize out assumptions, look for counter evidence, and think if itââ¬â¢s reasonably possible to draw different conclusions (92). We need to have sufficient sample size in order to reason effectively. Definitions Definition by Synonym: pornography is obscenity Definition by Example: a book is seen as obscene Definition by Stipulation: to bargain or agree on a definition Statement of Sufficient and Necessary Conditions: ââ¬Å"Something can be called pornography is and only if it presents sexually stimulating material without offering anything of redeeming social value.â⬠Letââ¬â¢s define what ââ¬Å"Good Writingâ⬠is. Assumptions Assumptions can be stated or unstated, explicit or implicit. Implicit assumptionà is one that is not stated but, rather, is taken for granted. Anà explicit assumptionà is one that is stated and given as evidence, also known as a premise. Evidence Evidence: facts or information indicating whether a belief or proposition is true or valid. Different disciplines use different kinds of evidence. We can use a text, field research, or experiments as evidence. Experimentation: science involves the systematic study of claims tested, designed to yield particular observations. Examples: a previous sample used as evidence. Real events drawn from history. Artificial or hypothetical cases cannot be used for evidence but can be used for persuasion. Analogies: a kind of comparison that asserts things that are alike in some ways are alike in others. Authoritative Testimony: citation or quotation of authorities. Statistics: numbers and data used to support claims. Graphs, Tables, Numbers Statistics can be misused and can be seen as misleading. Unreliable statistics, looks impressive but is insubstantial or irrelevant. Nonrational Appeals Satire: witty ridicule Irony: contrasts what is said and what is meant Sarcasm:à the use of irony to mock or convey contempt. Humor: being amusing or comical in writing or speech. Emotional Appeals In arguments we appeal to reason. Sometimes emotional appeals can be used effectively to aid the reason. Appeals to emotions can distract from the facts of the case, but they can also make the audience care about the evidence. Are emotional appeals fallacious? You should focus on the facts and offer reasons, but you may also provoke appropriate emotions in the readers. Be careful. Do not falsify Do not distract attention from the facts Do think ethically about how emotional appeals may affect the audience. Does All Writing Contain Argument? No, but most does. Most writing uses reason to get the reader to agree with what the writer is saying. In college, you should be using reason and evidence to support what you are saying. There should be a clear purpose and reason to your writing, hence it should be an argument. Problem Solution Example ââ¬Å"The Danger of a Single Storyâ⬠byà Chimamanda Adichie. To quote aà CNN article on the Danger of a Single Story: Nigerian author Chimamanda Adichie believes in the power of stories, and warns that hearing only one about a people or nation leads to ignorance. She says the truth is revealed by many tales. She illustrates this with a story about coming to the United States, as a middle-class daughter of a professor and an administrator, and meeting her college roommate. Adichie says that her roommateââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"default position toward me, as an African, was a kind of patronizing, well-meaning, pity. My roommate had a single story of Africa. A single story of catastrophe.â⬠Adichie also tells how growing up in Nigeria reading only American and English childrenââ¬â¢s books made her deaf to her authentic voice. As a child, she wrote about such things as blue-eyed white children eating apples, thinking brown skin and mangos had no place in literature. That changed as she discovered African writers, particularly the Nigerian Chinua Achebe. This is a great quote that highlights some of the moves we need to do in our article. It summarizes her topic, problem she is addressing, and solution; including examples she uses. Topic:à Many people do not realize that they are getting only one story. A single story is incomplete and she says dangerous. Problem:à Having a single story about an issue or group of people leads to stereotypes and incomplete information. Solution:à To look for multiple stories of whatever issue or topic you are hearing. She recommends we get our news and stories from multiple perspectives. Reasons and evidence:à She gives examples from her personal life to highlight that she has a personal connection. Background:à She gives background information, citing quotes and examples that place her issue in a historical context. She also uses current examples to place the issue in a contemporary context. Creating Structure Structure is very important to making an argument. It needs to be deliberate and well organized. You cannot come across as being all over the place. An argument needs order in order for the audience to follow along. Here is one possible outline to use to build your paper: Position (thesis) Background Reason with evidence Reason with evidence Reason with evidence Reason with evidence Counterargument with refutation Conclusion with so what question addressing audience Homework Rough Draft (2 pages typed for points)

Medieval Half-Timbered Construction
Medieval Half-Timbered Construction Half-timbering is a way of constructing wood frame structures with the structural timbers exposed. This medieval method of construction is called timber framing. A half-timbered building wears its wood frame on its sleeve, so to speak. The wooden wall framing - studs, cross beams, and braces - are exposed to the outside, and the spaces between the wooden timbers are filled with plaster, brick, or stone. Originally a common type of building method in the 16th century, half-timbering has become decorative and non-structural in designs for todays homes. A good example of a true half-timbered structure from the 16th century is the Tudor-era manor house known as Little Moreton Hall (c. 1550) in Cheshire, United Kingdom.à In the United States, a Tudor-style home is really a Tudor Revival, which simply takes the look of half-timbering instead of exposing the structural wooden beams on the exterior facade or the interior walls. A well-known example of this effect is theà Nathan G. Moore house in Oak Park, Illinois. It is the house Frank Lloyd Wright hated, although the young architect himself designed this traditional Tudor-influenced American manor home in 1895. Why did Wright hate it? Although Tudor Revival was popular, the house that Wright really wanted to work on was his own original design, an experimental modern home that became known as the Prairie Style. His client, however, wanted a traditionally dignified design of the elite. Tudor Revival styles were extremely popular to a certain upper-middle-class sector of the American population from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Definition The familiar half-timbered was used informally to mean timber-framed construction in the Middle Ages. For economy, cylindrical logs were cut in half, so one log could be used for two (or more) posts. The shaved side was traditionally on the exterior and everyone knew it to be half the timber. The Dictionary of Architecture and Construction defines half-timbered this way: Descriptive of buildings of the 16th and 17th cent. which were built with strong timber foundations, supports, knees, and studs, and whose walls were filled in with plaster or masonry materials such as brick. Construction Method After 1400 A.D., many European houses were masonry on the first floor and half-timbered on the upper floors. This design was originally pragmatic - not only was the first floor seemingly more protected from bands of marauders but like todays foundations a masonry base could well support tall wooden structures. Its a design model that continues with todays revival styles. In the United States, colonists brought these European building methods with them, but the harsh winters made half-timbered construction impractical. The wood expanded and contracted dramatically, and the plaster and masonry filling between the timbers could not keep out cold drafts. Colonial builders began to cover exterior walls with wood clapboards or masonry. The Look Half-timbering was a popular European construction method toward the end of the Middle Ages and into the reign of the Tudors. What we think of as Tudor architecture often has the half-timbered look. Some authors have chosen the word Elizabethan to describe half-timbered structures. Nevertheless, during the late 1800s, it became fashionable to imitate Medieval building techniques. A Tudor Revival house expressed American success, wealth, and dignity. Timbers were applied to exterior wall surfaces as decoration. False half-timbering became a popular type of ornamentation in many nineteenth and twentieth-century house styles, including Queen Anne, Victorian Stick, Swiss Chalet, Medieval Revival (Tudor Revival), and, occasionally, on modern-day Neotraditional houses and commercial buildings. Examples Until the fairly recent invention of rapid transportation, such as the freight train, buildings were constructed with local materials. In areas of the world that are naturally forested, homes made of wood dominated the landscape. Our word timber comes from Germanic words meaning wood and wood structure. Think of yourself in the middle of a land filled with trees - todays Germany, Scandinavia, Great Britain, Switzerland, the mountainous region of Eastern France - and then think about how you can use those trees to build a house for your family. When you cut down each tree, you may yell Timber! to warn people of its impending fall. When you put them together to make a house, you can stack them up horizontally like a log cabin or you can stack them vertically, like a stockade fence. The third way of using wood to construct a house is to build a primitive hut - use the wood to build a frame and then put insulating materials in between the frame. How much and what kinds of material you use will depend on how harsh the weather is where you are building. Throughout Europe, tourists flock to cities and towns that prospered during the Middle Ages. Within the Old Town areas, original half-timbered architecture has been restored and maintained. In France, for example, towns like Strasbourg near the German border and Troyes, about 100 miles southeast of Paris, have wonderful examples of this medieval design. In Germany, Old Town Quedlinburg and the historic town of Goslar are both UNESCO Heritage Site. Remarkably, Goslar is cited not for its medieval architecture but for its mining and water management practices that date back to the Middle Ages. Perhaps most notable to the American tourist are the English towns of Chester and York, two cities in northern England. Despite their Roman origins, York and Chester have a reputation for beingà quintessentially British because of the many half-timbered dwellings. Likewise, Shakespeares birthplace and Anne Hathaways Cottage in Stratford-upon-Avon are well-known half-timbered houses in the United Kingdom. The writer William Shakespeare lived from 1564 until 1616, so many of the buildings associated with the famous playwright are half-timbered styles from the Tudor era. Personal Brand (i.e. a human being) Research Paper
Personal Brand (i.e. a human being) - Research Paper Example It is for this very reason; it is more difficult to manage personal brands as compared to products or services associated brands (Vitberg, 2010). Oprah Winfrey happens to be the single largest one-woman personal brand in the world (Haig, 2011). This is because the brand Oprah is associated with specific personality traits and the mass perception of the brand Oprah has been managed till date with apt astuteness, finesse and dexterity (Haig, 2011). As a result, Oprah commands a very high mass popularity and many of the leading brands in the world aspire to associate with brand Oprah to leverage their net brand appeal. Table of Contents Executive Summary ........................................................................................... 2 1.0 Introduction .................................................................................................... 4 2.0 SWOT Analysis of Brand Oprah ................................................................. 4 2.1 Strengths ......... ............................................................................................ 4 2.2 Weaknesses .................................................................................................. ... ........................................................................................................... 9 1.0 Introduction It is a matter of public knowledge that not only Oprah Winfrey happens to be the largest one-woman brand in the world, but also that the leading brands in the world aspire to associate with this top notch personal brand (Haig, 2011, p. 131). The appeal of brand Oprah is such that it has not only revolutionized and redefined the history of television, but has indeed been successful in configuring a successful commercial empire around the attributes and mass appeal of the name Oprah (Haig, 2011, p. 131). In that context, brand Oprah is associated with a Midas touch. The mere association of a product or service with the name Oprah is just enough to make it a public rage. For instance a slight association of the brand Oprah with Spanx not only helped this little known under-garments brand evolve into a lead seller, but also helped it accrue a net annual turnover of ?220 million (Stylist, 2013). The mere mention of the brand Kindle at the Oprah show was enough to make people run for buying a piece of this gadget (Stylist, 2013). The book recommendations made by Oprah Book Club are a guarantee to make a publication an international best seller in a matter of days (Stylist, 2013). Thereby, it goes without saying that commercially speaking, brand Oprah commands an immense brand value and appeal (Haig, 2011, p. 132). However, the thing that needs to be understood is that brand Oprah commands such a successful consumer appeal owing to certain specific brand strategies, which not only make the brand Oprah soar over the social limitations ascribed to race, ethnicity and social status, but make it a name closely associated with reliability,

Utopian Thought in William Shakespeare :: Biography Biographies Essays
Although Columbus had discovered the "New World" in 1492, it is interesting to note how relatively uninterested Shakespeare was in the Americas or the western travel that was sweeping Europe. While some Englanders focused their attention and dreams on the uncivilized land in the west, Shakespeare "dreamed and wrote of the old world, of battles long ago, of an ancient story-land already splendid in its braveries and devotions" (Thorndike 110). He has left no evidence that might suggest any interest in the voyagers or the dangers faced on the uncharted oceans of the west, but he knew of the colonization endeavors through leaders such as Southampton, his early patron (110). The disinterest changed, though, when he read of the Sea Adventure shipwreck. In the year 1609, a year before the estimated writing of The Tempest, nine ships set out from England to strengthen John Smith's Virginian colonies. En route, though, one of the ships was carried away from the other during a storm. The lost ship, the Sea-Adventure, had on board the operation commanders, and all of the passengers were presumed to be lost at sea. However, a year later, news reached England that the crew and passengers of the Sea-Adventure had been blown to the coast of a Bermudan island, but they survived and rejoined the party the following year. Stunned English journalists reported many accounts of the shipwreck, and it is from these stories that some historians attribute Shakespeare's initial inspiration for the setting and foundation of The Tempest (Wain 202-203). After the shipwreck and news of the amazing survival, there were numerous

Essay: Case Study
G became aware what the counterpart has planned for the agenda and he was surprised and concerned about he detailed and long business meals and cultural trips without any information or expenditures, knowing that the companies budget is limited. Asking for more information, the local organizer of the counterpart ignored Mrâ⬠¦ G's requests, even the solicitation to speak with the boss, was rejected due to busyness and non-existent importance. At the end of the conference Mrâ⬠¦ G was surprised in the positive way, that the conference finally was a complete success. Why were the communication and the procedure of organizing the conference between the two parties so efferent? According to the theory of Edward T. Hall Is this, a classical example of monochrome and polychrome cultures. In polychrome cultures like in the example of the venue, time Is flexible. It Is accepted to do various things at once, agendas and business meals were extended at the pleasant way or laid, and cultur al events will be organized without consultation. Also communication, via emails like in the example of Mrâ⬠¦G, is not always enjoyable with people from this culture. Because of the different meaning of time. Time is wasted and not taken seriously because it can be changed in seconds; they have a constant state of flux. Scheduled events or plans can be discarded or changed immediately. They interact with several customers at once, and are entangled with each other. Arranging dates therefore is very difficult. In the view of Mrâ⬠¦ G, who is obviously a monochromatic type, is this situation awkward. He likes doing things one by one and in an accurate way.Plans or events are scheduled down to the last detail without Interruptions and In a linear way of time. It is important take ointments seriously without breaking deadlines. Monochromatic types are short- term oriented and therefore leisure time Is only accepted after the Job Is done and projects are promptly and satisfactory. Another culture difference, which occurs In this example, is the dimension of power distance from the theorist Egger Hefted. And expect that power will be allocated unequally. According to Hefted there are two differences, low power distance and large power distance. In large power distance cultures as in the case, employees are awaiting for instructions by their boss. They need to be told what to do, in the way it has to be done and they also accept the high differences in the range of salaries and executive positions. Mrâ⬠¦ G requested several times for more information's but Ms. K the local organizer ignored his objection, even a request for a conversation with the boss of the local organizer was denied due to busyness of the boss. Which means the boss has other important things to do and no one is allowed to interrupt him or to question his decisions. Here the subordinates accept the high power status, and when the boss gives the control way like in the case, organizing the e vent, neither Ms. K nor Mrâ⬠¦ G has to doubt about the planning progression of the international conference. In lower power distance culture, subordinates like Mrâ⬠¦ G and others superiors consider to be treated equally. Flat hierarchies are expected, without having differences in executive positions. That's why Mrâ⬠¦ G felt quite unsatisfactory to be treated unfairly. He only wanted to be well informed about the progression for the conference and be aware of new circumstances for his planned project.

Consumer safety Even though purchasers have these rights, they are able to without problems be unnoticed. The legal guidelines are designed to save you businesses that engage in fraud or distinctive unfair practices from gaining a bonus over competitors and can offer extra protection for the vulnerable and people unable to take care of themselves. Purchaser pastimes also can be protected by means of promoting competition inside the markets, which immediately and in a roundabout way serve clients, consistent with financial performance Consumerism Consumerism is a social and monetary order that encourages the purchase of goods and offerings in ever-extra quantities. The time period is often related to criticisms of intake starting with Thorsten Veblen. While the term consumerism is also used to consult the consumerists movement, consumer protection or purchaser activism, the point of interest of this segment relates to the first definition. In economics, consumerism refers to monetary regulations that region emphasis on consumption. In an, summary experience, its miles the notion that the unfastened preference of consumers need to dictate the economic shape of a society (cf. Producers, specifically inside the British sense of term). The time period consumerism turned into first utilized in 1915 to refer to advocacy of the rights and pastimes of customers (Oxford English Dictionary). Today the term consumerism more usually refers back to the, emphasis on or preoccupation with the acquisition of client goods (Oxford English Dictionary), a motion that emerged in the Sixties. This more cutting-edge conceptualization is primarily based on the writings of sociologist and economist Thorsten Veblen who lived at the turn of the 20th century. He coined the time period conspicuous intake to describe this seemingly irrational and confounding form of financial conduct. Veblens scathing inspiration turned into that useless intake is a form of repute display. history of Consumerism Consumerism these days is an international phenomenon. Humans buying goods and consuming substances in extra in their primary desires is as old as the first civilizations (e.g. ancient Egypt, Babylon and historic Rome). The seeds of cutting-edge day consumerism grew out of the commercial Revolution. In the nineteenth century, capitalist improvement and the commercial revolution have been more often than not targeted on the capital goods quarter and commercial infrastructure. for instance, after gazing the assembly strains within the meat packing industry, Frederick Winslow Taylor brought his theory of clinical management to the enterprise of the meeting line in different industries; this unleashed tremendous productivity gains and decreased the prices of all commodities produced on assembly lines. Henry Ford and other leaders of enterprise understood that mass manufacturing presupposed mass intake. Within the agrarian economic system, the operating lessons labored long hours and had little time for intake. At the same time, as formerly the norm had been the scarcity of resources, the economic Revolution created a brand new financial situation. After the economic Revolution, products were available in extraordinary portions, at low fees, being hence to be had to truly everybody. get entry to credit, in the shape of instalment payments aided in addition consumption. Modern-day Consumerism Starting in the Nineties, the cause most often given for attending university had modified. Making a whole lot of cash outranked preceding motives together with becoming an authority in a, area or supporting others in issue. This purpose correlates with the rise of materialism, particularly the technological factor: the growing occurrence of mp3 players, virtual media, tablets and smartphones. Madeline Levine criticized what she saw as a massive alternate in American way of life; a shift away from values of network, spirituality, and integrity, and toward competition, materialism and disconnection. Businesses have found out that rich purchasers are the most inviting objectives of advertising. Therefore, top elegance tastes, life, and options trickle right down to grow to be the standard for all customers. The not so wealthy customers then buy something new so one can speak of their location inside the lifestyle of affluence. A purchaser will have the instant gratification of buying an, costly item to improve social repute. Emulation is likewise a middle factor of twenty first century consumerism. As a trendy trend, normal consumers searching for to emulate people who are above them inside the social hierarchy. The bad attempt to imitate the rich and the wealthy imitate celebrities and different icons. The superstar endorsement of products can be seen as evidence of the evocation of the desire of contemporary customers to buy merchandise in part or completely to emulate human beings of better social repute. Moral Consumerism The rise in popularity of ethical consumerism over the last two decades can be linked to the rise of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) movement. As global population increases, so does the pressure intensify on limited natural resources required to meet rising consumer demand. Industrialization of developing countries, facilitated by technology and globalization is further straining these resources. Consumers are becoming more and more aware of the environmental and social implications of their day-to-day consumer decisions and are therefore beginning to make purchasing decisions based on environmental and ethical implications. However, the practice of ethical consumerism is in its nascent stages and far from universal. References: https://www.stoletie.ru/versia/komu_pomeshali_kennedi_340.htm
